Two seafood professionals passionately working for a more sustainable industry. Get to know the NASF 2022 conference hosts.

For the second year in a row, NASF has challenged seafood professionals to take an important role at NASF.

Marianne Koch (Cargill Aqua Nutrition) and Benedicte Simensen (Mowi) are our NASF 2022 conference hosts.

Marianne, you work as a Sustainability Manager in Cargill Aqua Nutrition, what are your main job responsibilities?

My main job responsibilities consist of developing sustainable solutions that meet both the current and future sustainability challenges the industry is facing. Increasing the circular economy and reducing the footprint of the industry are in this two important goals, which both require collaborations throughout the value chain. My job is very varied and interesting, with no two days being the same.

What do you find most rewarding in your current position?

Being part of developing the sustainable solutions the industry needs to be able to grow in a sustainable way is very rewarding!

I am very passionate about the seafood industry, and truly believe it holds the key in ensuring sustainable food for a growing world population. Luckily, I am not the only one believing this, and meeting other passionate industry professionals and experts working towards the same goal as my self is very inspiring.

How do you feel you contribute to developing the seafood industry?

Feed is one of the most important input factors in aquaculture, directly affecting both the efficiency and sustainability of the production. Ensuring a sustainable feed, both in short term and long term, is therefore essential. Continuously working on making the raw materials we use today even more sustainable, as well as developing new, sustainable raw materials is a very important task to support sustainable growth of the industry, and I really feel I contribute to this task.

What are your expectations to NASF?

I am really looking forward to meeting a lot of interesting people from all over the world. It is the perfect arena to discuss both challenges and solutions related to seafood production. NASF will furthermore bring valuable input I can use in my everyday job, giving a broad view of the industry.

Benedicte, you work as a project manager in the Seawater Technology Team in Mowi Global R&D and Technical.
How would you describe your main job responsibilities?

In Mowi’s R&D department we work on continuously improving our operations by testing and supporting implementation of new equipment, products and working methods in addition to provide technical support to all business units. My focus is projects related to sea lice technology where I work close with our farming operations to find the best solutions for Mowi. I work in a dynamic environment which requires me to know our farming units challenges, goals and status and also to be updated on new research and new available technology. A typical workday for me varies from sitting with analysis or reports in the office to being out on sea farms doing field work.

What do you find most rewarding in your current position?

I find it rewarding to work on improvements and new solutions to produce healthy sustainable food. The combination of doing research but also being so hands on with our farming operations is the perfect match for me. And do not forget all the brilliant people I have the chance to learn from and work with.

How do you feel you contribute to developing the seafood industry?

I hope I can contribute to a sustainable growth in the aquaculture industry by finding new solutions to our existing challenges.

What are your expectations to NASF?

At NASF we really get the opportunity to take a step back and look at the larger picture of the seafood industry. This is the place where seafood companies, stake holders and experts all get together to share opinions and to discuss the seafood future. With so many smart and influential people finally gathered I am excited to feel the buzz from constructive discussions and to get inspired by great speakers.

Thank you both, we look forward to seeing you in Bergen June 21-23rd of June.
