«How do we move from «thumbs up» to implementation of GM-derived raw materials»?

To ensure sustainable growth of global aquaculture, implementation of a broader, cost competitive specter of raw materials is needed. Biotechnology-derived raw materials are recognized as significant contributors to a more sustainable future, and in Europe, these are already in use in feed for pork, chicken, dairy and beef. In Norwegian Salmon feed, they are still not used. What does it take to start using these renewable and scalable raw materials also for Salmon farmed in Norway?

Evolving trends in marine ingredient utilisation: insights and implications

Over the past twenty years, feed production by the global aquaculture sector has grown to something in the order of 50+ million tonnes. Despite the dominance of grain use in aquaculture feeds, marine ingredients remain a strategic ingredient. However, due to limited growth capacity, its use has been dominated by the highest value market sector at any time. This is a trend that looks to continue with changing patterns in fishmeal and fish oil use emerging across the world in the 2020’s. These changes have led to a broader assessment of the strategic values of various feed ingredient options, and importantly how we assess their utility. This is also driving a focus on broader sustainability issues, which includes mechanisms to make such assessments more quantitative and transparent, and therefore more valuable.
